Female Genital Mutilation or Cutting (FGM/C) is a deeply entrenched custom, with prevalence rates between 80% to 90% in Sierra Leone. It is traditionally performed during girls' initiation into the Bondo secret society. Keep the Drums, Lose the Knife advocates for Alternative Rites of Passage (ARP)—preserving the Bondo's rich cultural traditions, drumming, dancing, and mentorship while ensuring there is zero cutting. We also help traditional cutters (Soweis) pivot to sustainable alternative livelihoods.
Our Approach: Cultural Preservation
The Bondo society is a vital institution that prepares young girls for womanhood, fostering solidarity, music, and community values. FGM/C is not the core of Bondo. By celebrating the drums and the music, we can empower girls, eliminate physical harm, and keep our heritage alive. We hold public declaration ceremonies where traditional cutters (Soweis) lay down their knives and receive new trade tools to start sustainable livelihoods.
Survivor Safe Spaces in the UK
In Peckham, London, we support survivors of FGM. Weekly support circles provide medical awareness, menopause counseling (as FGM survivors face early and difficult menopause), trauma workshops, and material support including a diaper and food bank for young mothers.
Documentary Film & Photo Book
Artist Henry J. Kamara is leading a photography book and documentary film project titled "Keep the Drums, Lose the Knife". This initiative records the positive cultural practices of the Bondo society while raising global awareness about the campaign to eradicate FGM/C.
